Purpose of the Site
Welcome to my Web site! I’ve designed it for anyone interested in access to material relating to my teaching, research, and other professional activities at Iowa State University. (And I’ve included a bit of personal information as well.) But the site has been designed specifically to serve as a clearinghouse for information about the history and structure of the English language for use by students, prospective and actual English teachers, and, for that matter, anyone who’s interested in those twin topics. 
Teaching
The Teaching Page is the heart of the site. Here can be found resources for my current courses, in the main on the history and structure of English. These resources include course descriptions, syllabi, bibliographies, and pages of useful links. As the site develops, I hope that my students and I can add even more helpful materials, including study guides, sets of discussion questions, sample tests and quizzes, and especially further Web resources. 
Research 
Links on the Research Page contain information on my academic training, publications, and other rather boring matters. More important, there are links to information on my current research obsession¾simplified versions of English (which I call “amputated Englishes”) such as Basic English, Caterpillar Fundamental English, and the like. 
Service
For what it’s worth, and for the sake, I guess, of completeness, I’ve included a Service Page with an account¾mercifully brief¾of (what else?) my service work.
Personal
These sorts of pages can be dogs. Someday mine will contain pictures of mine (we have four). At the moment, go to the Personal Page for some rather desultorily compiled links connected to my idiosyncratic politics, oddball aesthetic interests, and nerdish hobbies, most of which have (arguably) some vestigial intellectual content or connections to linguistics and thus merit inclusion on an academic Web site..
